What Do School Governors Do?

Who We Are

School governors are volunteers from the local community, including church, parents and the local authority. We work with the Head Teacher and staff to develop lifelong learning for pupils and their future success. The governors provide strategic leadership and accountability to ensure the school is well-run and continuously improving.

What We Do

• Set the strategic vision, ethos and values which help to shape the school’s aims
• Appoint the Head Teacher and set annual objectives for improvement
• Support and challenge the Head Teacher by asking questions and offer guidance to make sure decisions are in every pupil’s best interests
• Oversee finances to make sure the budget is spent wisely and aligned with School Development Priorities
• Check performance by regularly monitoring teaching quality, learning, and pupil attainment and progress
• Oversee safeguarding practice to make sure all pupils and staff are protected
• Ensure the school is compliant with all its legal obligations as set out by the DfE
• Monitor essential statutory policies, e.g. safeguarding, behaviour, attendance, curriculum

What We Don’t Do

• Run the school day-to-day, or manage staff
• Deal with individual complaints or intervene in any issue unless part of a formal process

Why It Matters

Governors bring different skills and perspectives, helping the school give every child the best possible education. We meet 9 times across the academic year.
